Ingredients
  

  • 2 oz rye whiskey or bourbon
  • 1/4 oz absinthe
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • orange peel for garnish
  • maraschino cherry optional, for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Start by chilling an Old Fashioned glass by filling it with ice water. Set aside.
  • In a separate mixing glass, place the sugar cube and add the Angostura bitters. Muddle the mixture until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Pour in the absinthe and swirl the mixing glass to coat the sides with the absinthe.
  • Add the rye whiskey or bourbon to the mixing glass filled with the muddled sugar and bitters.
  • Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir the mixture gently for about 30 seconds until well chilled.
  • Discard the ice water from the chilled Old Fashioned glass and strain the cocktail mixture into the glass over a large ice cube or a few smaller cubes.
  • Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a gentle twist. Optionally, garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Notes

The choice of whiskey (rye or bourbon) can significantly impact the flavor profile of the cocktail. Rye offers a spicier taste, while bourbon provides a sweeter profile. Adjust the amount of sugar based on personal taste preference. For an extra aromatic experience, consider adding a few drops of orange bitters along with the Angostura bitters.
