Beer Flip

A traditional Beer Flip is a rich and frothy concoction that dates back to colonial times. It is a warming drink that combines beer, rum, and a whole egg, sweetened with sugar and spiced with nutmeg. It's traditionally made by heating the beer and then "flipping" it back and forth between two pitchers to froth it up before adding the other ingredients.

  • Measuring cup
  • measuring spoons
  • Grater or spice shaker

Ingredients

  • 12 oz Brown Ale
  • 2 oz Dark Rum
  • 1 Whole Egg
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • Pinch of Ground Nutmeg

Instructions

  • Heat the brown ale in a saucepan over medium heat until it is warm but not boiling.
  • In a separate heat-proof cup or bowl, mix the whole egg with the sugar until well combined.
  • Add the dark rum to the egg mixture and stir well.
  • Slowly pour the warm beer into the egg and rum mixture, stirring constantly to prevent the egg from curdling.
  • Once combined, pour the mixture back and forth between two pitchers or mugs until it is frothy and well mixed. This is the "flipping" process.
  • Pour the Beer Flip into a preheated mug or tankard.
  • Sprinkle the top with a pinch of ground nutmeg.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

The Beer Flip can be adjusted for sweetness by adding more or less sugar to taste. It is important to use a dark beer with rich flavors to balance the sweetness of the sugar and the warmth of the rum.
