In a shaker, muddle the cherries and mint leaves with the simple syrup and lemon juice to release their flavors.
Add the bourbon whiskey to the mixture.
Fill the shaker with ice and shake well until the outside of the shaker feels cold.

Notes
To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool before using.For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon and use cherry juice or a cherry-flavored syrup with a splash of club soda.
