  • stirring spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine (750 ml, such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100 g)
  • 1/4 cup vodka or aquavit (optional)
  • 2-3 sticks cinnamon
  • 5-6 whole cloves
  • 5-6 whole cardamom pods

  • 1-2 strips lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup blanched almonds (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large pot, combine the red wine, water, and sugar. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  • Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods, orange zest, and lemon zest to the mixture.
  • Place the pot over medium heat and warm the mixture gently, ensuring it does not reach a boil. Allow it to simmer for about 10-15 minutes.
  • If desired, add the vodka or aquavit, along with the raisins and blanched almonds. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from heat and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices and zest.
  • Pour the Glögg into heatproof mugs or glasses. Garnish with additional almonds or raisins if desired.

Notes

Glögg can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before serving. Adjust the spices according to personal preference or experiment with different types of red wine for varied flavor profiles.
