Equipment

  • Julep cup or highball glass
  • Muddler
  • Spoon or swizzle stick

Ingredients
  

  • 8 fresh mint leaves plus a sprig for garnish
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • Crushed ice

Instructions
 

  • Place the mint leaves and simple syrup into a julep cup or highball glass.
  • Gently muddle the mint with the simple syrup to release the oils.
  • Fill the glass with crushed ice.
  • Pour the bourbon over the ice.
  • Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside.
  • Top with more crushed ice to form a dome shape.
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Notes

The Mint Julep is traditionally served in a silver or pewter cup which frosts over as the drink is stirred, adding to the experience. Use high-quality bourbon for the best flavor.
